Letter from Jon, October 2026

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
Rom 1:16

Dear Liberty Family and Friends

Over these last weeks much of our thought and focus has been on the doctrine of hell and the question of what happens beyond this life.  It has brought forth a lot of discussion and many questions and I am so grateful to this Liberty family for the graciousness with which we have navigated this.  I feel incredibly blessed to walk this path with you.

I want to remind us all though that the reason that this doctrine came to the fore in the first place was because of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We believe this gospel, this Good News.  We don't just play lip service to it and it is not just a script or a story we memorise in order to proclaim, but it is, as Paul says, 'the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes'  This gospel has changed the course of my life and yours.  It has brought life and hope and freedom and healing and, I can join with Paul to say that 'I am not ashamed of the gospel'.

It is the Good News of the kingdom of God breaking through into our sin-infected, broken world, bringing light that the darkness can not overcome.  One of the questions I included in my Sunday follow up this week was 'If someone who knew nothing about Christianity spent a month among our church community, what would we hope they would notice?'  I think that is a fascinating question that really brings to mind the power of the gospel.  We know that we are not a perfect people or a perfect community, that we are, together, a work in progress, but my belief is that anyone who was to observe Liberty life for any length of time would be impacted by the hope we have, even when life is tough, by the forgiveness that is extended when we have hurt each other, by the freedom and joy when we meet, by the diversity of people brought together and the transformation of lives and families, by the servant heart that consistently gives ourselves away for the good of others.  But most of all my hope is that people would be impacted by the God we worship and proclaim, that the reason for the life we have together is the Good News of Jesus Christ at work in our lives, by the kingdom of God tangibly present in our community. Praise be to God.

We have a gospel to proclaim, powerful to save and to transform and it is very Good News.

Love and blessings

Jonx
